1961 National Championship had been won by Alabama. The Sugar Bowl win over Arkansas just made it sweeter!

The win over Arkansas capped a season in which the Bama defense gave up only 23 points all year. The most any opponent scored was 7.

In 1962, Bryant and Namath held every opponent to single digits while scoring double digits on all but one. A 7-6 loss to Georgia Tech would be enough to keep Alabama from repeating as National Champions.

Alabama had losses to Florida and Auburn, and was not in the National Championship picture for 1963, but the three seasons to follow would yield 2 National Championships and what many feel should have been a third.

Coach Bryant was 4-0 Against Paterno. A strange irony for the man who would one day break his record.
